Fr. Robert McAleer
Fr. Robert McAleer, better known as Fr. Mac, has served as St. John Vianney's pastor since 1999. Born in Clinton, Iowa, in 1944, Fr. Mac was raised on a farm near Charlotte, Iowa, the fourth of six children. He graduated from St. JosephHigh School in DeWitt, Iowa, in 1963, and St.AmbroseCollege (now St.AmbroseUniversity) in 1967 with a B.A. in philosophy. He received his M.A. in Modern Languages later that year from the University of Notre Dame.
Fr. Mac attended seminary training at Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and completed his preparation to ordination to the priesthood at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, MN. He was ordained a deacon in 1970 and was assigned to the Deaconate Internship at Sacred Heart parish in Fort Madison, Iowa, before returning to St. Paul Seminary to complete his studies. Fr. Mac was ordained a priest at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport on May 29, 1971.
Early in his priesthood, Fr. Mac taught high school Religion and Spanish classes, and went on to serve in several parishes in Southeast Iowa. Since his arrival in Bettendorf, Fr. Mac has served on many diocesan committees and commissions, including the Presbyteral Council, Personnel Board, Diocesan Building Commission, Priests' Aid Society, Pastoral Council, and the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal.
Fr. Mac looks forward to continued service to the growing ministry and parish of St. John Vianney, as long as he is given the opportunity.
