Baptism

Baptismal Instruction Class is held in the Vianney Room on a Saturday morning in the months of January, March, May, July, September and November from 9:00-11:00 am. Please call the Parish Administration Center (563-332-7910) for details and registration. We ask that you attend one of these classes before the birth of your child. Godparents are encouraged to attend. Baptisms at SJV are scheduled through Nicky Stevenson, 563-332-7910 x113.

What are parents' requirements prior to their child's baptism?

Parents should attend a baptismal preparation class. This class is offered every other month at SJV, with Our Lady of Lourdes parish hosting the class on the alternate months. Parents who have attended the class within the past three years are exempt.

How are baptisms scheduled?

Contact Anne Kurth at 332-7564 or via email at re@stjohnvianneybettendorf.org to schedule your child's baptism.

When can my child be baptized?

Baptisms are celebrated after the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturdays and after the 11:00 a.m. Mass on most Sundays. These are considered "private baptisms", although up to three families may be scheduled at one time. On the third Sunday of the month, baptisms by immersion are celebrated at the 11:00 a.m. Baptism Mass.

What is the difference between a private baptism and the Baptism Mass?

During a private baptism, parents can choose whether they would like their child to have water poured over his/her forehead or to be baptized by immersion in a ceremony after Mass. During the Baptism Mass, a child will be immersed in the Baptismal Font during the 11:00 a.m. Mass, a celebration that is witnessed by the whole church community.

What should my child wear?

Your child should wear white, the symbol of baptism.

My older child has not been baptized. What should I do?

Contact Father McAleer or Nicky Stevenson. There are many options available for an older child who has "missed" one or more sacraments. It's easier than you think!

Who baptizes children at St. John Vianney?

Father McAleer baptizes children by immersion during the Baptism Mass once a month. Deacons Daryl Fortin and Bill Donnelley baptize children in private baptisms on Saturdays and Sundays. Families are welcome to request a specific celebrant for their child's baptism. Who can be a godparent? Click here to review our guidelines for Godparents.

Can we videotape and/or photograph the baptism?

Absolutely!

Is there a fee for baptism?

St. John Vianney does not charge a fee for sacraments.
